Autumn is here... time to get cosy!

Written by Lisa Cadman, 28/10/2021

As the temperature drops, the nights start to draw in, and the mornings are dark too, we can all start to feel a bit low mood wise. Many friends and clients have told me how they are feeling a bit fed up at the moment, and I too, have struggled with motivation some days in recent weeks.

I took myself off to Ramster Gardens at the weekend, to try and clear an ongoing headache. I didn’t feel like going out (and had a lot of chores to do at home!), but was SO glad I did – it did me the power of good to go for a gentle walk for a couple of hours, listening to the wind in the trees and the birdsong, and watching the robins and squirrels. ‘Acer Avenue’ there is just amazing – I wanted to share some photos I took there on the blog this month – the autumnal colours were just stunning. I can highly recommend their ‘Turmeric Latte’ too – so warming and comforting!

It is quite hard these days to find the ‘peace’. There are so many ways for us all to stay in touch – it sometimes feels like we spend our days just working, doing chores and in between having to check Email, Facebook, Messenger, Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter etc.! I put my phone on silent while I was walking around the garden for a while, and it felt like the first time in ages that time stood still for a bit, and my head could just catch up with my thoughts and relax.

I think it’s really important that everyone finds their way to that bit of peace – away from the day-to-day pressures. For me on Sunday, it was taking time to look at the trees, take in the sounds and the amazing colours, and enjoy the time to take photos and read my book on my favourite bench there. Another day when I can’t get out, it might just be taking ten minutes to read a chapter of my book, or taking time to have a hot bath.

For you it might be a different activity, but the important thing is that you do something for yourself. We need to find time to still get outside when we can, as well as treat ourselves to a lovely mug of our favourite tea, coffee or hot chocolate, and make time for reading or other hobbies we may find comfort in.

Make time to chat with friends on the phone, or online, if you are not going out as much, and recognise that you may need more sleep or rest time if you find your energy is dipping, as well as trying to still make time for exercise to keep yourself fit and well when you can.

Comfort is key this time of year – wrap yourself up and keep yourself warm, and don’t feel guilty about binge-watching those boxsets, or watching that series on Netflix, or giving yourself a few hours here and there with a good book, or just taking an afternoon nap or hot bath if you need one. Chores will always be there!
